Devin Fitzpatrick Sophomore Class Vice President September 2, 2021
From Core camp to September 2, 2021, I have helped and taken part in many events in our more normalized year. With the vaccine being largely distributed across the country, RHS has gotten approval to hold dances, rallies, and sporting events which has allowed our program to do much more than last year. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend core camp but I did communicate with my Class President in everything that went on. In core camp, we brainstormed and created a good plan for homecoming and chose the theme of the “Under the Sea” Disneyland ride for the sophomore class. After core camp, pow-wow took place, and volunteered to help with the Juniors and Seniors helping with picture taking. And on the second day of pow wow I took a shift and sold sophomore class t-shirts to the sophomores. After this, leadership ran an in-person club rush for the first time since 2019. I sold t-shirts for both of the days, setting up the table and doing the cashbox. We then were supposed to throw a back-to-school dance where I would be in the fencing committee and decoration committee but the dance got canceled because of air quality issues. I also would clean up at the end of the dance and will hopefully fulfill these tasks on our rescheduled date of September, 18th. I am not in any committees that I am aware of. I was supposed to be on the decoration committee for the back-to-school dance before it got rescheduled. The decoration committee would be in charge of decorating the dance and making it look good and we plan to do this on the rescheduled date of the dance. This qualifies as a special committee. As a mentor, my newbie has been Nathan Curless and so far I would say that things have gone great. Nathan, or as we call him Nate, has been really good in the program and I see a ton of potential in him. He wants to learn about the program as much as he can and I’ve loved being his mentor to answer his questions and give him advice. I’ve loved this new program and I I do not have any concerns with the way things are going in leadership currently. I would like to give my positive comment to the whole freshmen class. I am very impressed with everything that they are doing in this program and I’m very glad to see the initiative they are taking. It’s strange not being the freshman this year and seeing the freshmen go through all of the problems and struggles I went through, but I am very proud to say that the freshman class has done a great job, especially my partner, Nathan Curless. There aren’t really any changes that I would like to see as of right now in leadership. I have changed the world today by including more and more people every day in high school. I believe with the return of more normalcy in school this year I have been able to help unite my sophomore class and our high school as a whole this year. I myself have felt way more included this year and I feel like our school is way more united than it was online. Uniting my peers has been the impact on my campus so far and I can’t wait to do more with my class.
October/September ASB Report
Position Assessment From September 2nd to the day of October 14th I have partaken in various jobs with leadership as a whole and with my class. On the very day following our last ASB meeting, leadership listened to Scott Backovich speak about leadership as a whole and enlightened us in what we do. Immediately after this took place we began homecoming preparations. I took part in finding links for purchase orders, brainstorming ideas with my class president, and talking to Mrs. Pendleton about homecoming sign-ups at the beginning of homecoming preparations. On the 18th of September, ASB held a back-to-school dance in which I was a part of the fencing and decorating committee to help set up and clean up the dance. As the month progressed I helped find music and organize rehearsal times for our lip sync with our Administrative Assistant. In the actual sequence of events of homecoming, I participated in the lip sync battle, built the sophomore poster with my class, was a riser at powder puff, built the sophomore window with my class, and built and rode on the sophomore float. I also helped decorate for the homecoming football game at the very end of homecoming. And the weeks after homecoming I wrote praises to be given to my classmates. Overall, I believe the past month or so has been quite successful and eventful for me.
Standing Committees I am a part of no standing committees as of right now.
Special Committees The special committees I have been a part of are the risers committee for powder puff, and back to school dance decoration, and fencing committees. In the risers committee for powder puff, I put up the risers for the homecoming candidates to stand on along with the others in the committee. In the decoration committee, I helped put up decorations for the back-to-school dance and helped take them down. And for the fencing committee, I put up fencing with the others to establish the dance borders.
Mentorship Evaluation My buddy and I, Nathan Curless, spent a lunch together this month to get some quality bonding time. We decided to go to Pizza Plus that day and discussed many different topics with each other. One of the big things I remember us discussing was the leadership elections coming up. I tried to provide what I needed when I was pondering elections last year because I remember that being one of the hardest decisions. We also discussed classes, what courses to take, and sports while we were having lunch together. A big aspect of all of this was time management and I tried to give him as good of advice as possible on how to do it. Overall, I felt we bonded very well on that lunch and I enjoyed that experience a lot.
Concerns The only concern that I have as of right now is with some of the off-task behavior in class by some of my classmates. It’s fine if you have nothing to do or are just having brief conversations with each other but for the people that have jobs to do, I have seen some neglect going on.
Positive Comment I would like to praise Naomi for doing such a good job this year to run leadership well as a whole and not fold under pressure. I feel she has been doing an excellent job as ASB president and I am very confident that this whole year will be a success under her.
Change One change I would like to see in class is some more recognition of the positions in class. This isn’t completely prioritized, but I was just thinking about it and I know some positions in class are definitely looked down on and underappreciated. That’s why I feel they deserve some more appreciation.
My Impact I have changed the world today by reaching out to people and listening to them release their emotions and rants. I have a large number of people that I try to influence positively every day and I always offer myself to just listen to their thoughts. Therefore I am impacting the world by listening to the people I meet.
November/December ASB Report
Devin Fitzpatrick Jill Mortensen Sophomore Vice President 09 November 2021
Position Assessment Since October 14th the sophomore officers and I have been extremely busy. We immediately began planning for Winter Formal and warm and fuzzy week holding meetings every Thursday to discuss what has been done and what needs to be done. We progressively put through the purchase orders for the decorations for formal, along with the bundt cakes and backdrop. A formal Instagram account was also made to post proposals to raise publicity for Formal. We also completely planned out the schedule for Warm and Fuzzy week and discussed what must be done to make it happen. I personally was one of the Vice Presidents’ in charge of the blanket drive for RHS. I communicated with the Stockton homeless shelter on everything related to the fundraiser and largely planned with the other Vice Presidents on what was to go down to have a successful fundraiser. The Vice Presidents and I launched this fundraiser in the two weeks before Thanksgiving break and raised about $420. We used these donations to purchase 23 blankets in which we are about to transport to the Stockton Homeless Shelter. As November began the sophomore officers found a DJ in DJ Danny for formal and extensively searched for a tent. We did find one although the price was a little larger than first hoped for. We also did the purchase orders for Warm and Fuzzy, buying the wrapping paper and cookies. I was in charge of the procedure form for Warm and Fuzzy as well. I also personally presented in the National Student Leadership Conference on November 6th successfully to around 200 people at one point. The experience was amazing and I am now going to present to the board on the 13th about my experience. The sophomore officers began to publicize Warm and Fuzzy and sell tickets for Formal in late November and early December. We made a large profit off of ticket sales making roughly $11,000. And then when December 4th came we launched Formal and had an overall positive reaction from the community. On December 5th we set down and requested the class wrap doors for Warm and Fuzzy week which also turned out really well. And now we are currently in the middle of Warm and Fuzzy week giving the students a feeling of warmth and holiday spirit before finals. Standing Committee As of right now, there are no standing committees I am a part of as far as I know. Special Committee I was a part of a couple of special committees this month. I was a part of the door wrapping committee for warm and fuzzy and the collecting and counting coins committee for the blanket drive these past two months. Mentorship Evaluation My buddy and I have been helping each other out throughout the past two months with everything that we have had going on in our lives. I always try to give him advice wherever I can for we are alike in many ways. We both are athletes balancing sports, academics, and leadership while still attempting to enjoy our high school years. I have recently been advising him through the cover letter and resume portion of the professional section of his website. I feel that Nate and I have built a strong bond and I would be sad if we are not buddies anymore next semester but I know it is probably for the best. Concerns A concern I would like to be addressed is the lack of respect in my class in particular towards their officers. I feel that I have been seeing quite a lot of disrespect towards the hard workers in my class and I feel it is not right because it seems none of their work is being recognized. Positive Comment The positive comment that I have is for Kylee Brown. Kylee has persevered so much throughout all of the formal planning and has carried a lot of the workload in making it the best it could possibly be. I know for a fact that we would not have nearly the same reaction from the community without such a strong leader. Change One change I would like to see is the rise in respect towards officers and people of higher positions because I feel as though the class is not respecting the positions that leaders have worked hard to earn. My Impact I have changed the world today by inspiring a great work ethic and perseverance in the individuals around me. By showing my work ethic and dedication to my goals I am inspiring the others around me to do the same and am positively changing the world.
ASB Report January
POSITION ASSESSMENT Since December 9th I have been busy with warm and fuzzy, my NatStuCo experience, Winterfest, and now elections. Right after our last ASB meeting I was finishing up the rollout of warm and fuzzy with my fellow class officers and beginning my final. I also presented in front of the school board in city hall on the 13th of December on behalf of my experience with the NatStuCo virtual conference. Within this, three students of leadership and I presented our experience with the National Student Leader Conference to the school board. During winter break my fellow sophomore officers and I began planning our pillar, poster, window, and shopping cart. We also filled out purchase orders to submit when we got back. After winter break my job became much larger as my class president, Kylee, got COVID for the two prior weeks to Winterfest. I had to substitute in her place for these two weeks and that included storing all of the supplies, making a schedule to work on the spirit competitions, communicating with the sophomore class, and much more. Kylee ended up getting better just in time for Winterfest so she could help us be successful in Winterfest. After this, I worked on my professional speech and my election preparations. I gave my professional speech on “Why Unicorns are Real” and I am currently working on running for Junior Class Vice President. STANDING COMMITTEE I am currently not a part of any standing committees. SPECIAL COMMITTEE I was a part of no special committees this month. MENTORSHIP EVALUATION My buddy and I have had a good semester so far as I see him as my friend now more than I do just a buddy. I always enjoy sharing his company and whenever we see each other around school we dap up and greet each other. CONCERNS As of right now, I don’t have many concerns but one thing that I struggled with in January was the number of assignments piled up in a short time period at the same time as Leadership applications. It has reduced and we are getting a lot of time in class to do assignments so that is why it isn’t a concern for me anymore. POSITIVE COMMENT The positive comment I have to give is to Gabbi Ilardi. She has a lot on her plate right now with link crew and renaissance and it has brought a lot of stress on her. Despite this, she has persevered and done a great job and she deserves a positive comment. CHANGE As I said in my concern, I feel that next year we should not have as much work during elections. I understand that elections are personal and on our own and we shouldn’t work around them but at the same time the workload shouldn’t increase during elections. At one point I had four leadership assignments due in one week on top of Winterfest all during leadership applications. I feel that for next year during leadership applications we shouldn’t have less work than usual but just an average amount of work. MY IMPACT I have changed the world today through my NatStuCo presentation, Winterfest, and staying involved. Through my NatStuCo presentation, I gave the school board insight into how my experience on the national level of leadership went and represented Ripon on a national level. Through Winterfest, I brought the sophomores winter joy through the spirit competitions we had. And overall through these past months, I have stayed involved, joining link crew, running track, attending basketball games, being spirited, and much more. Through this, I have been able to make an impact on a wide range of students and overall make an impact for the better.
February/March ASB Report
POSITION HEADER Throughout the months of February and March, I have been more laid back in my position. I was very occupied with elections in February and public speaking along with eighth-grade day. All of these ended up playing out pretty well for me. As March began I began to work on the challenge with my classmates and joined the Student Appreciation committee along with the fencing committee. I worked accordingly to help plan and execute a presentation on the project in which I felt personally well. Throughout the rest of the month, I took small roles in supporting dodgeball and the gallery of the arts. With the beginning of this month, we have begun planning tribe awards and college reveal night along with the end of the year rally and our banquet. STANDING COMMITTEE I am in no standing committees as of right now. SPECIAL COMMITTEE I am currently apart of the Student Appreciation Committee and the Fencing Committee for the challenge. MENTORSHIP EVALUATION My buddy and I have been all thumbs up for the past couple of months. We both gave generous A-Z flashcards expressing the good qualities of each other and I was very pleased with mine I know. CONCERN I feel there is not enough productive working towards the challenge in our work periods. Many students are either not working or working on something else, and not much is getting done from the challenge. POSITIVE COMMENT One positive comment that I would like to give is to Jenna Skavdahl. She is constantly putting in work and being on top of things and it is quite inspiring to see, within leadership and outside of the classroom. CHANGE One change that I would like to see is more emphasis on the challenge and the work that needs to be done for it because I feel like it is not getting the work done that needs to be done. MY IMPACT I have impacted the world these months by being an inspiration to student-athletes everywhere. I feel that I have balanced track and academics really well this season and by excelling at both I am showing all student-athletes what to do to use proper time management.
ASB Report May
Devin Fitzpatrick Sophomore Class Vice President 19 May 2022 ASB Meeting May POSITION HEADERThroughout the months of April and May I was largely taking part in working on the challenge or the week dedicated to only giving to RHS. Before this I took part in love ripon in which I volunteered in raking bark at local parks in which was a fun experience. The challenge then took place and I was a part of various activity preparation such as jeopardy and handing out treats at lunch. Despite communication issues I felt that this week played out well. I also took part in decorating for the end of the year dance and putting up fencing. Following this I have been selling T shirts and preparing for the end of the year rally. STANDING COMMITTEEI am in no standing committees as of right now. SPECIAL COMMITTEE I was a part of the Student Appreciation Committee and the Fencing Committee for the challenge. MENTORSHIP EVALUATION I am sad to say that my mentorship with Nathan Curless is ending because I feel that I got so lucky to be partnered with him. I have made a genuine good friendship with him and I am glad I got to spend the next two years with him. CONCERN I feel that there was not enough awareness and preparation for the multiple page portfolio section as I have never experienced this section and not many of my peers seem to have known about it until the day it was due. I feel like the leaders that experience this section should let the new leaders know what to expect. POSITIVE COMMENT One positive comment that I would like to give is to Emma Phelps. After seeing her farewells I can see how much she genuinely cares about this program and the heart in which she has put into all of us. I wish her the best of luck in college and I know she’ll do great. CHANGE One change that I would like to see is more emphasis on working on the challenge right away after the presentation is done next year. I feel that everybody thought the challenge was so far away and therefore it was largely procrastinated and that led to the outcome being very rushed. MY IMPACT I have impacted the world these months by beginning to organize t-shirt sales for the class of 2024 and bringing the new junior class officers together to build the comradery that we will need for next year. I also have continued to represent Ripon High School well through track, soon to attend masters.
